Mechanic Transforms $400 Buick Riviera Into America’s Best Custom Car

When you see an old car like a 1964 Buick Riviera bought for $400, you may think that it’s ready to slip quietly into the automotive tar pits. That’s not the case for the rust bucket Riviera featured in this video as a tenacious Canadian mechanic recognized a ton of potential in the vintage ride that others would likely discard and send to the scrapyard. JF Launier spent about 22,000 hours and $300,000 pimping out the car, even remortgaging the house of his parents as well as his own just to finance the project. But it was all worth it because the finished product – named “Rivision” – has been recognized as the best custom car in the world. It won the Ridler award at the 2014 Detroit Autorama. The car was built over the course of six years with Launier adding a variety of modifications to the original body of the 1964 Buick Riviera. It has significantly increased in value and has reportedly reach speeds of up to 155 mph.
